How to Use Bagged Milk
« on: December 04, 2009, 01:32:25 AM »

To answer common misconceptions about bagged milk, once and for all, I'm using these simple instructions set forth by a website dedicated to clearing this up.

As you can see, the empty milk bag has been taken out of the pitcher/jug and placed on the table for your viewing covenants. What next?!

(Editors Note: I truly believe my mother's milk pitcher is the most God awful piece of flowery shit. We have matching kitchen utensils too.)

For photo purposes, the empty milk bag has been set aside. In it's spot the replacement bag of milk has been positioned.

The typical amount of milk that can be found in a single milk bag is one litre. (Which is 101.47 fluid ounces, 3.17 quarts, and 0.8 gallons according to this website.) You
buy milk bags in packaged bags of three like shown below.

With little to no effort milk bags can be placed into the pitcher easily, except for the ugly-death-by-flower one we have, which you need to smack the bottom of til the bag gets in there.

A milk bag can be opened with any type of generic scissors. The trick is to cut the corner off. The size of the hole you cut can be determined on what you're going to use your milk for.

I.E: If you were going to use your milk to pour into coffee, you would want a fairly small hole. So when you go to pour you will be given a small stream of milk.

And there we have it. The milk bags in all it's glorious action. Being poured into a glass with only a slight tip of the pitcher.

(Editors Note: Notice the flower glass too. Though I actually like that glass. I wish I could say the same for the pitcher.)

As far as storage goes the milk bag just sits in the fridge like so.

Most people are utterly disgusted at the thought of not sealing up the milk and having it sit there with the air
getting at it. But really, the hole isn't that big, and the bags, in a normal household don't last too long before they need to be changed again.

Because we don't have to do something just because America does. When will America realize that bagged milk is better?

wow codez, awesome thread, but i must rebuttal, first you're milk has to be placed in a container to keep it upright, and then open it with a pair of scissors, now you have a bag that is open all the time, i see no sealing device on this bag, keeping milk fresh.

now take the American counterpart. I give you carton milk, some plastic bottles, some of a paper variety, and the freshest of freshest glass bottles, however the glass variety are usually purchased in farm stores, and ice cream shops.

notice the plastic jug that it can stand upright without the aid of a pitcher or other apparatus, also please note the lovely red cap which allows you to pour your milk and re seal it, keeping in the good milk freshness, most convenient packages are either the 1 gallon or the 1/2 gallon, there are smaller containers, but it seems redundant to show them all

carton milk also can stand on its own, some cartons have a top shown in the photo, and some have a spout that opens out of the carton allowing you to open and close, although i prefer the screw top.

its clear to see the plastic cartons or jugs is really the way to go, and there you have it, the battle for milk supremacy

edit: before someone brings up that plastic bags and plastic jugs let in light which in turn loses some of its vitamins and nutrients, a paper carton are opaque, and block 97% of harmful light keeping the milk that much fresher, however i prefer the plastic container for ease of use.

Yeah, doing something just because the rest of the world has adopted it might be a pretty good idea.

In fact, it's a great idea. Cartons and jugs of milk for us. Metric system for you.  hahaha

Deal?

Also, I ha'd at this thread. I even went "Woooot! Sealtest 2% for the win" out loud.

if something sharp pokes the carton of milk, there is a much less chance of a huge mess.

to add on to Juju's argument, notice the built in handle on the carton.

So you put the bag into a container that has a handle? Isn't that a waste of time?

Don't count points before I get to rebut. Actually, if you read the thread, very limited air gets into the bag when opened. Also, it's a mere litre, whereas you keep 2/3 extras in the fridge COMPLETELY sealed retaining milky goodness for whenever you choose to use it. ALSO, the type of bag used retains the freshness better than a normal carton. ALSO, why the hell do you care about light getting into your milk? Of course your milk is going to go bad if you don't put it in the fridge, Juju. (headslap)

Once again wrong. Milk bag's can take quite a bit of poking without being popped. Contrary to popular belief, milk is a liquid and allows the plastic bag to move with pressure (smartass) unlike with jugs where the plastic has to remain still and just simply be poked with a hole.
