The Large Hadron Collider, the world's most powerful particle accelerator, just cannot catch a break. First, a coolant leak destroyed some of the magnets that guide the energy beam. Then LHC officials postponed the restart of the machine to add additional safety features. Now, a bird dropping a piece of bread on a section of the accelerator has, according to the Register, shut down the whole operation.

The bird dropped some bread on a section of outdoor machinery, eventually leading to significant over heating in parts of the accelerator. The LHC was not operational at the time of the incident, but the spike produced so much heat that had the beam been on, automatic failsafes would have shut down the machine.

This incident won't delay the reactivation of the facility later this month, but exposes yet another vulnerability of the what might be the most complex machine ever built. With freak accident after freak accident piling up over at CERN, the idea of time traveling particles returning from the future to prevent their own discovery is beginning to seem less and less far fetched.

The slice of bread in the picture is not a baguette (smartass)

I have a friend who's received a scholarship to go study at CERN so at least I can be happy that he will die before me.

i think they should just make everyone happy by creating us ALL our own personal black holes.

might not be such a bad idea to takes these things as an obvious sign to not start the fucking thing up!  :S

I just posted this because I thought it was a funny reason for a breakdown.

There was no real chance of anything remotely dangerous happening, if it had been running at the time the failsafes had just shut the thing off. I'm not trying to scare monger here, there's no valid reason to think that the LHC will go all black hole on us, because it won't. On the contrary, the research done there is very important for, among other things, finding the yet undetected force carriers that quantum field theory predicts, which would be the first step towards a fuckton of really cool technology.

Lies SLT its all going to bring in so many black holes and suck in the earth its all going to be postponed till 2012 when it all goes wrong (tinfoil) ha

Maybe this thing will save us, Like if an asteroid is going to hit the earth, they could make a black hole for us to hide in. (awesome)

if your toaster breaks when you put bread in it, yes.

hahaha

You'd think that if a particular piece of equipment was that sensitive, they'd put a tent over it or something?

All jokes aside I like the fact that the failsafe systems are working, even if it only takes a slice of bread to trigger them.
